10,000 Reasons to Visit St. John, USVI
Every travel experience is different. I think there is a difference between my favorite experiences abroad and my favorite destinations. Europe was by far my favorite experience because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to try new and scary things. St. John on the other hand is my favorite place on this earth. Where do I even begin with how much I love this place?!
Why travel to St. John
You know that imagine in your head of yourself frolicking on a beautiful abandoned beach that looks straight out of Lost? That’s St. John. Crystal clear water. Warm sandy beach. Overhanging palm trees. It is literally a dream come true.
Okay that’s cool, but your thinking isn’t that every island in the Caribbean? I think St. John is so unique compared to the rest of the Caribbean! For one it’s a U.S. territory so you can use dollars, speak English, and feel 100% safe because you are on U.S. soil. What really stands out about St. John to me is the nature. The island is 2/3rds national park which means that the island is basically a lush forest of vegetation and palm trees. When you are off the beach it almost feels like your in the rainforest! You can hear all the animals chirping and cricketing. The scenery is absolutely to die for!
The towns that are occupied with human life are totally fun! There beach bars which as the name entails are right on the beach. They have cornhole you can play in the sand which is such a blast, you will learn I am an avid cornhole player! The food is amazing and everyone has that chill island vibe.
Don’t even get me started on the beaches!! There are dozens, yes dozens, of beaches that all have their own feel. You can spend your entire island vacation going to a new beach each day and never get bored. Each beach has incredible snorkeling. One beach has huge sea turtles and stingrays that you can snorkel with. The water is so warm and the water laps at your ankles it is so calm. I’m not a strong swimmer so I love St. John because the water is buoyant, clear, and there are no waves. I’d say the only downfall of St. John is you can’t stay right on the beach like some islands but St. John makes up for it through stunning beach after stunning beach. You wouldn’t want to limit yourself to just one anyways!
I honestly am shocked more people don’t know what a gem St. John is. I feel like it gets overshadowed by the more touristy St. Thomas, but that is the appeal of St. John: it feels undiscovered! Shhh! An added tidbit on St. John is Kenny Chesney has a house there and after you go you will listen to some of his older songs and realize he is talking about St. John and even calls out some of the bars by name! Old blue chair? St. John.
One major thing that happened to St. John recently? The hurricane…I would NOT let this dissuade you. The island is beautiful and the hurricane can’t remove that fact. The beaches have not gone anywhere! St. John is rebuilding and a lot of the restaurants are already open for business again. Plus, this island survives on tourism so why not help the people of St. John and visit my favorite spot in the world while seamlessly allowing residents to afford food, a home, and basic necessities of life.
Pictures I think are the only way to do this place justice. St. John is the ultimate dreamers paradise. If you really need 10,000 reasons to go let me give you a hint that all 10,000 reasons wouldn’t be enough to describe this islands lust. The images engrained in your mind will continue to inspire and promote happiness long after your tan has faded. And isn’t that the whole point? We are all on that journey, on the pursuit of happiness and something larger than ourselves.
