Spring Break in Cabo

Cabo and Spring Break are an iconic duo. All of the west coast goes to Cabo to celebrate spring break in March. Whether you are a spring breaker or plan your trip in March, it will be crazy. Hundreds of people flock to Cabo each week to let off some steam and party until the sun comes up. Fair warning it can get rather ratchet, but if you take that with a grain of salt it is loads of fun. Speaking of salt, be ready to be sick of tequila by the end of the week! Cabo will be the best and worst week of your life. You’ll come home with amazing memories but not want to go back anytime soon that’s for sure.

Where to stay

Tip #1: I have made this mistake before, when you book a hotel make sure you put how many people are staying in the room. I booked what I thought was a super cheap hotel with 3 beds, to find out because I only but 2 people as staying in the room, they downgraded the room. After fighting with management for a few hours, we found a room that would accommodate my group of 6 people. Don’t make this mistake. People in Mexico will take advantage of every situation possible.

Tip #2: If you stay the night at someone else’s hotel they will require a wristband to prove that you are staying there. Have fun running from security if you persist further. Again, hotel management is not fun to deal with.

Tip #3: Tell your roommates to not deadbolt the door if there is one! My roommates got home before me one night and locked the deadbolt. The room key does not open the deadbolt and hotel management has no master key for the deadbolt. My roommates were in too deep of sleep to answer my knocks. I ended up stranded outside my hotel room for a couple hours tired and upset until my neighbors got home who shared a balcony with us which allowed me access to my room. That being said lock your passport in a safe because clearly these rooms aren’t the safest!

Where to spend your day

Mango Deck is where everyone goes. It is right on the beach so you can hang out in the sand or in the shade on the deck. You have to constantly buy food or drinks to remain in the lounge chairs. And I mean constantly. If you drink too slow they will make you move. Street vendors will be pretty non-stop coming up to you to sell you something. Just wave them away and don’t make contact. I do recommend buying one souvenir from them though! As annoying as the beach sounds, it is a lot of fun with all your friends next to a stunning beach and warm sunshine. This is where it can get ratchet i.e. booty shaky contests, girls getting fake ass tattoos, and lots of tequila being poured down everyone’s throats.

Day excursions

Go on a boat booze cruise. These are a lot of fun to hang out on for a couple hours. That is if you remember the whole thing, everyone tends to go pretty hard on these.

Snorkel or kayak adventure. I took a trip where you got a choice of a couple different activities. The water was a little rough for me which freaked me out, so I ended up kayaking. It was relaxing and a fun activity outside of drinking at Mango Deck.

Where to go at night

Squid Row is where everyone ends their night. There are three levels of the bar. If you get a good spot on what looks like bleachers you will have lots of space to dance and enjoy yourself. If you don’t you will get pushed around a bit as the walking space is limited. Another fun place is what I call cow bar. Not sure its actual name but it has a huge cow outside.

What to pack

All you really need are some trusty bikinis and and some shorts and tank tops. Bars are super casual in Cabo so you will look out of place if you dress up too much. You can dress cute just keep it casual. Sounds dumb but bring a fanny pack! You can put your phone and wallet in it during the day and not have to keep track of a purse which could get stolen. They are back in style for party scenes such as this so you will not be judged! Also make a Costco run when you first get in to stock up on alcohol, snacks, and packs of water. You’ll end up saving some money and trust me you will want every last one of those waters. Make sure you drink way more water than you think you need!! Your hangover will thank you.

How long to stay

5 days is normally plenty for spring break week. 7 days makes for a really long week and you will most likely just end up sick by the sixth or seventh day unable to enjoy the fun anyways. Outside of spring break week, a week is a good amount of time to enjoy the pools, beaches, and bars.

How to get around

You will fly into Cabo’s airport, go through customs, and get a taxi from there. The taxis are easy and ready for you when you land. Once at your hotel you will most likely be in walking distance of either the beach or the bars. For whichever you cannot walk to, you just take a taxi or water taxi. Cabo is safe with everyone around so you should be able to walk around by yourself but try to always stay with a friend anyways.

How much to budget

I could normally find a flight and hotel package for around $800. Plan on spending a lot once you get to Cabo. Drinks can be cheap depending on the place ($5-$8) but you will be buying a lot of them. Street vendors are pretty cheap for food and have excellent Mexican food.

Coming outside of spring break

I went back to Cabo for two days this past summer. It was a lot quieter outside of spring break week. It wasn’t as enjoyable  because the people were a huge draw before. I loved being surrounded by all people my age. When that is taken away, I was just hassled by street vendors and paid a lot of money to sit at a lounge chair all day. It was fine for the two days I was in port for my cruise, but if I spent a full week long vacation in Cabo, it would have to be for the nicer side of Cabo as in the fancy resorts and private communities. I wouldn’t go back again otherwise as I can go to nicer beaches elsewhere in the world and not get hassled the entire time. The one big benefit is the two hour flight time though. That’s hard to beat.
